Let’s begin our day in sync with mother earth, with all natural ingredients and minimal waste.
I live in a small apartment with my husband and 11 years old son. We don’t want to waste or pollute water, soil and air.
Our zero waste close to nature morning routine is as follows:
First question I asked myself and am asking you all is :
Why are we wasting clean drinking water in flushing??
Toilet Flushes : Each time we flush, we release about 3.5 gallons / 13 litres of water. An average person flushes 4 to 6 times a day. This adds up to 7600 gallons or 28,769.13 litres water a year by one person. Multiple this by no. of members at home. So in my family of 3, in one year I am wasting 28,769.13 * 3 = 86,309.39 ltrs of water.
Can I do something about it?
Yes.
Since I am on my quick first steps journey where without much effort and few thoughtful steps, I can achieve REDUCTION IN WASTE.
Hence, detailed and more technical steps Later. Will begin with SImple TO DO STEPS:
- Install half and full tank flushes mechanism. Use half tank flush for liquid flush and full tank flush for solids. Many of us just don’t bother – Press any button and press it multiple times until everything is clear. Let’s be mindful here about unnecessary wasting clean water.

2. Tooth Brushes and stands:
Over 4.7 billion plastic toothbrushes are produced every year worldwide. Each of us will use 300 toothbrushes during our lifetime. Over 99% of which are made up of plastic and will end up in our landfills, and oceans.
Make a switch to our FDA approved compostable bamboo toothbrush today.

BambooIndia, Terrabrush,, Ecosattva are few of the mid range bands whose products are available online. I personally like the one from Bare Necessities.
Similarly, go for bamboo based toothpaste and toothbrush holders. Many options are available online. We just have to thoughtfully, mindfully, purposefully say NO to plastic. Less demand we generate, less will be produced.

Tooth pastes
Most toothpastes found in the market have an average of 21 chemical ingredients, many of which are harmful for our bodies while being packaged in plastic toothpaste tubes that typically end up in our landfills.
Remember those good old days of Daatun or Dabur Laal Dant manjan. People even used to rub charcoal+salt on their teeth.
I know a person who lived for more than 90 years with healthy gums and teeth, no denture.
Can I make my own toothpaste – Yes. Do I want to? – No because I have other priorities.
So What can do that keeps me organic and also reduce my waste.
Option 1:
Neem Datun Twigs : You will generally get them in any Ayurveda shop and online too. Within India Online options for Daatun can be found here: Outside India can be found here:

Option 2:
If Daatun/ twigs are not your thing, just switch to organic toothpastes or charcoal toothpowder:
Order online : Here or Here or just search Amazon 🙂
These products come in glass jar and are completely organic and eco friendly.
Option 3: Brush with activated charcoal, can be found here or Amazon here
Option 4. Toothpaste Tablets : Search for Zero Waste Toothpaste tablets online and you will find options near you. Buy the ones without fluoride and with eco friendly mark.
Option 5: If you or your family members are actually too resistant to change and are finding it really tedious to change toothpaste then… just
Buy a bigger pack buddy!
Instead for buying a separate toothpaste for your kid, for an elderly in your house or a picky member of your house, all of you talk and settle down on one option( Remember, we enrolled our family in this journey first ( Step 0,1 Blog here ).
So together, all family members please settle down on one toothpaste and buy the biggest available pack of that. Remember, (Bulk is better Blog, here )You will realize that in six months, instead of throwing 3 different tubes, you are throwing only ONE.
🙂
