Food Stories – Dine out, Order online or Take Away sustainably

We are aware that hot food shall never be kept in plastic containers. Basically, heat can cause the BPA and Phthalates in plastics to leach into your food.

That means, that hot food which is served in plastic containers that we receive whenever we order food online, is actually problematic.

Plastic cutlery, plastic containers, plastic boxes (yes, those one time use plastic containers that save us from dishwashing otherwise, should be a Big No, No)

So, what to do?

If you are using online apps to order food, there is simple three step process that can do wonders.

Step 1: Refuse Cutlery (especially if you are getting food delivered at home)

Step 2: No plastic containers for packaging

Step 3: No Aluminum Foil

Many restaurants have started using wooden spoons instead of plastic, but if we are ordering food to be delivered at home, we don’t need cutlery. Isn’t it?

Well, becoming a reason of further deforestation by increasing demand of wood is that last thing we would want to do, right? Remember the Rule – REFUSE.

Step 2: Non-plastic containers only.

Many restaurants are opting for non-plastic paper based or sugar cane husk based containers but still those obvious advantages of easy availability and cost effectiveness make it first preference.

Can we do our bit here?

  • Prefer to order from a restaurant that delivers in Non-Plastic containers.
  • If you favorite restaurant isn’t thinking about going plastic free, Can you put in your preference , your request in a subtle manner. E.g. if ordering online, Can we give a call to restaurant or place in instructions like below:

When business owners will receive multiple requests like this, sooner or later change will begin. And give a pat on your back when you witness that change 😊

3. Aluminum foil is a non- disposable. Aluminum foil is a neurotoxin

Oxford’s dictionary defines neurotoxin as; neu·ro·tox·in (noun)

· 1.a poison that acts on the nervous system.

Even more dangerous when heated. Good news is that there are eco-friendly and health friendly alternatives.

e.g. Use Food Packaging / Wrapping paper just like Subway offers.

A go to alternative for household use is just like below: (inexpensive and available on Amazon too).

Similarly, look for an eco friendly brand for backing parchment paper to find a replacement of foil in baking or heating.

If you tried any of the above, please do let me know how did it go.

Will be happy to hear! 🙂
