An urban forest is a forest in urban area. In municipal terms, we call it green belt, green cover etc. Basically, a small forest within urban human settlements is called urban forest. It is different from urban landscapes, plantations or park as it is raw, left untouched and hence becomes self-sustainable within few years just like natural forests.
To setup an urban forest, land patches as small as few square meters and large as few acres can be used.
Urban forests play an important role in benefitting the environmental conditions of their respective cities. They moderate local climate, slowing wind and storm water, and filter air and sunlight. They are critical in cooling the urban heat island effect, thus potentially reducing the number of unhealthful ozone days that plague major cities in peak summer months.
Akira Miyawaki method of creating urban forests was invented by and named after Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, the ‘Miyawaki Method’ is a unique technique to grow forests. We can use this method to grow urban forest with in short span of 10-15 years.
In this method, we plant 3-5 NATIVE species of different height and category within 1 square meter. We prepare land such that these species get abundant nutrients as they grow. Eventually, these plant species grow faster by competing against each other for sunlight and food. Such forests need care for initial 2-3 years and eventually a natural ecosystem gets created such that the forest takes care of itself.
Team SustainX worked with Greater Noida authority, Delhi NCR to increase the green cover through Miyawaki plantation. Work is in progress on 6000 sq mtrs. land for Miyawaki Afforestation.
